People drink non-alcoholic (NA) drinks even if they aren’t sober for a lot of practical and social reasons. It’s not only about avoiding alcohol entirely.
- Pacing their alcohol intake
Many people alternate alcoholic drinks with NA ones to slow down how much alcohol they consume.
Example: beer → sparkling water → beer → soda.Benefits:
Avoid getting too drunk
Reduce hangovers
Stay out longer without overdoing it
- Staying hydrated
Alcohol is dehydrating, so people often drink water, soda, or mocktails between alcoholic drinks to prevent dehydration and headaches.
- Designated Driver
If someone is driving & providing a safe ride home, but still want to engage socially.
- Enjoying the taste or ritual
Some people simply like:
mocktails
non-alcoholic beer
fancy sodas or sparkling water
They get the social vibe of drinking without adding more alcohol.
- Social situations
Holding a drink helps people:
blend in at parties
avoid constant offers of alcohol
stay part of the social ritual
Even people who aren’t sober might grab NA drinks so they don’t stand out or feel pressured.
- Health or medication reasons
Someone may still drink occasionally but limit alcohol because of:
medications
training/fitness
stomach issues
trying to cut back
- They’ve already had enough
Sometimes the simplest reason: they’re already tipsy and don’t want more alcohol, but still want something to sip.
Non-alcoholic drinks let people pace themselves, hydrate, stay social, and avoid getting too drunk without stopping drinking entirely.

The difference between 0.0% alcohol and 0.5% alcohol is mainly about how much alcohol is allowed to remain in the drink.
- 0.0% Alcohol
Definition: No detectable alcohol (or extremely tiny traces below testing limits).
Typical labeling: “Alcohol-free.”
Amount: Essentially 0.0% ABV (alcohol by volume).
Examples: Some alcohol-free beers, wines, and spirits.
Practical effect: You cannot get intoxicated from it.
-0.5% Alcohol
Definition: Very low alcohol content but not completely alcohol-free.
Typical labeling: “Non-alcoholic” in many countries.
Amount: Up to 0.5% ABV.
Practical effect: Still extremely unlikely to cause intoxication, but it does contain a small amount of alcohol.
Usually worded as “de-alcoholized”
- How small is 0.5%?
For comparison:
Regular beer: ~4–6% ABV
Non-alcoholic beer: ≤0.5% ABV
0.5% drink has about 10× less alcohol than regular beer.
You’d need to drink many cans very quickly to equal the alcohol in one regular beer.
Bottom line: 0.0% means no measurable alcohol, while 0.5% means a tiny amount is still present.
